Old School, reinvented - 10th Feb 2015
Let’s face it, the music greats are considered the greats for a very good reason. So, the past weekend, 4Ever Odd was lucky enough to reflect on why exactly we love these greats so much in the presence of Blinde Opera, a fresh new cover band singing the songs and sticking to the rules of the Old School of Hard Rock. Yes, many bands do covers, but none of them do it quite this well.
On first glance, one would expect the standard cover band experience: House of the Rising Sun, Hotel California and good old Smoke on the Water. But this is not the case. Blinde Opera starts their sermon with songs by 3Doors Down, Blur, Blink 182, Creed and Kings of Leon. They then proceed to kick the congregation in the pants with a collection of classics by Guns & Roses, AC/DC, Metallica and Lynyrd Skynyrd. To top off this salient sermon, Blinde Opera also re-introduced 4Ever Odd to a single performed by Leery, Disillusioned. This is still a tune for the charts.
Blinde Opera is a well oiled, well timed machine that pulls this wide-ranging repertoire off effortlessly. The energy of youth exuded by lead singer, Robert Main (formally from Leery), and the lead guitarist, Leon van Zyl, polishes the old classics to a bright new shine while the true bad-to-the-bone hard rockers Dave Richman (Bass), Michael Brier (Rhythm) and Ian Hale (Drums) remind the newer riffs of their old school roots. The result tips the hat at the old Greats while firmly establishing a unique new sound.
Bearing in mind that this was only their third performance, and only five months have passed since they teamed up, it is clear that great things can be expected.
This is Old School meets New School.
This is Enter the Dragon meets The Matrix.
This is Blind Opera
